چکیده
The fascinating story of olefin (or alkene) metathesis (eq 1) began almost five decades ago, when Anderson and Merckling reported the first carbon-carbon double-bond rearrangement reaction in the titanium-catalyzed polymerization of norbornene.1 Nine years later, Banks and Bailey reported “a new disproportionation reaction . . . in which olefins are converted to homologues of shorter and longer carbon chains . . .”.2 In 1967, Calderon and co-workers named this metal-catalyzed redistribution of carbon-carbon double bonds olefin metathesis, from the Greek word “μετŔθεση”, which means change of position.3 These contributions have since served as the foundation for an amazing research field, and olefin metathesis currently represents a powerful transformation in chemical synthesis, attracting a vast amount of interest both in industry and academia.4-6

Chelated ruthenium catalysts for Z-selective olefin metathesis.
We report the development of ruthenium-based metathesis catalysts with chelating N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands that catalyze highly Z-selective olefin metathesis. A very simple and convenient procedure for the synthesis of such catalysts has been developed. Intramolecular C-H bond activation of the NHC ligand, promoted by anion ligand substitution, forms the appropriate chelate for stere...
متن کاملRuthenium-based complexes containing a benzimidazolium tag covalently connected to N-heterocyclic carbene ligands: environmentally friendly catalysts for olefin metathesis transformations.
Two ruthenium-based pre-catalysts containing an ionic tag covalently connected to a N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand are reported. These novel complexes, bearing a polar benzimidazolium group, are air-stable and can be easily prepared from commercially available reagents. The quaternary benzimidazolium tag allows the efficient separation of ruthenium waste from the metathesis product after r...
متن کاملExploring new generations of ruthenium olefin metathesis catalysts: the reactivity of a bis-ylidene ruthenium complex by DFT.
Density functional theory calculations were used to predict the behaviour of a potential novel architecture of olefin metathesis catalysts, in which one of the neutral ligands of classical Ru-based catalysts, e.g. a phosphine or an N-heterocyclic carbene, is replaced by an alkylidene group. Introduction of a second alkylidene ligand favors dissociation of the remaining phosphine and the overall...
متن کاملRuthenium Olefin Metathesis Catalysts Bearing Carbohydrate-Based N-Heterocyclic Carbenes.
Ru-based olefin metathesis catalysts containing carbohydrate-derived NHCs from glucose and galactose were synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopy. 2D-NMR spectroscopy revealed the presence of Ru-C (benzylidene) rotamers at RT and the rate of rotation was measured using magnetization transfer and VT-NMR spectroscopy. The catalysts were found to be effective at ring-opening metathesis p...
متن کاملRu-Based Z-Selective Metathesis Catalysts with Modified Cyclometalated Carbene Ligands.
A series of cyclometalated Z-selective ruthenium olefin metathesis catalysts with alterations to the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand were prepared. X-Ray crystal structures of several new catalysts were obtained, elucidating the structural features of this class of cyclometalated complexes. The metathesis activity of each stable complex was evaluated, and one catalyst, bearing geminal dimet...
متن کاملA Ruthenium Catalyst for Olefin Metathesis Featuring an Anti-Bredt N-Heterocyclic Carbene Ligand.
A ruthenium complex bearing an "anti-Bredt" N-heterocyclic carbene was synthesized, characterized and evaluated as a catalyst for olefin metathesis. Good conversions were observed at room temperature for the formation of di- and tri-substituted olefins by ring-closing metathesis. It also allowed for the ring-opening metathesis polymerization of cyclooctadiene, as well as for the cross-metathesi...
